Variation in English Words and Phrases(external link)

Variation in English Words and Phrases is an interface to the British National Corpus, which allows you to:

* search for words and phrases by exact word or phrase, wildcard or part of speech, using anchors and targets for fuzzy matches
* find the frequency of words and phrases in any combination of registers and compare between registers
* find the frequency and distribution of words with similar meanings and compare between synonyms and other semantically-related words

The British National Corpus is a 100 million word collection of samples of written and spoken language from a wide range of sources, designed to represent a wide cross-section of current British English, both spoken and written.

The Compleat Lexical Tutor includes a frequency-list based concordancer with attached dictionary especially appropriate to language learners, who can click on an alphabetical listing to get a root word and its derivations, or on a derivation to get a concordance of that word.
